Not only is my website now free of adverts (except I few I put in when they had a clickthrough policy rather than compulsory banner ads) but it even has its own domain name: www.sensiblemarks.net

Congratulations. :) I like your website; I added it to my bookmarks. I'm looking forward to reading some of those essays!

I'm also relieved that there are actually a few people in here who are close to my age. Talk of Eminem, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Tori Amos and all the "I-just-can't-seem-to-get-a-date" angsty stuff gets really old.

Hell, I talk about these people all the time! Haven't you read my rants? ;-)

As for "I-just-can't-seem-to-get-a-date", well, that's what being married and in your forties is all about. As far as I can tell, my marriage is technically "open", but we're both in the state of "Jesus, you think I can be bothered to go through all that stuff again? Give me a break!" Add to that the fact that probably the only women who'd go on a date with me are sweet, bright but hopelessly naive undergraduates who are convinced that because I can sound wise and witty in class, I hold the secrets of the universe. Give me a break!

Yes, I've seen a few. :)

On the dating... yeah, really! It's like, "what, you mean I'd have to avoid onions & garlic and actually shave my legs all the time??? Forget it!" *L* And, um, wouldn't an undergraduate age student be young enough to your daughter... almost? ;) (Yeah, yeah, I know--it's not supposed to matter with men. I'm well aware of the asinine double standards!) Heh heh heh...

No "almost" in it! It was brought home to me a couple of years ago when one girl said to me: "I've always looked on you as a father," then, seeing the look on my face, added "er, I mean big brother."

I have nothing against age gaps (either way) in theory, but in practice I think I'd find the resulting culture gap very wearing, which goes back to what you were saying about Eminem et al.

It's not "you're as young as you feel." It's certainly not "you're as young as the woman you feel." It's "you're as young as the person whose music you relate to most." Which makes me 318.

A father figure, eh? ;) Oh, those young, starry-eyed students... always getting crushes on their teachers!

Culture gap -- yes! Anything beyond 15 years is getting to be a generation gap, wherein the older person might mention The Who, and the younger person asks, "the who??"

318 years? I think that's even before Mozart's time, isn't it? :) (Me: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Prokofiev... I'm sure I could think of more if I was wide awake!) =)

If I got my maths right, that makes it 1685, the year when Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann were born. That's still the music I'm most at home with (I was an "early music" specialist when I was an undergrad). I still listen to a lot of stuff coming out now, of course - just so long as it isn't Avril Lavigne or Eminem. What rarely happens now, though, is getting really excited about some new band in the way I did when Dark Side of the Moon came out, I first heard Patti Smith or Peter Gabriel IV blew my mind.

Patti Smith, you mean the one originally from the group Scandal? ('Goodbye to You') Or some other Patti Smith? Yes, I remember Pink Floyd very clearly! And Led Zeppelin, and of course The Beatles. I also fell in love with that one song from Somewhere in Time (not the one by John Barry). I like some of the more recent artists too. Some of them. Actually, have you ever heard of Heitor Villa-Lobos? He's a little more contemporary in the classical genre ('A Lenda do Coboclo'). :)
