I'm hooked on a Turkish historical/fantasy TV series called "Karaoğlan" (pronounced "kara-owe-lan", just like Turkey's new eminence gris is pronounced "air-doe-an", not "erdoggan"). It's a Xena-style romp with some great tongue-in-cheek dialogue. In this scene, Karaoğlan comes face to face with the evil sorceress Zenka for the first time.

"So you're ... her!"
"Yes. I am Zenka, Queen of Darkness ... but you can call me Zenka for short."

Oh...my...God !!!

You teach at Bilkent...at my school !...

!

I'm shocked. Ok, so you can ignore my previous question...It "was" stupid.

I knew it would only be a matter of time before I bumped into someone from Bilkent on LJ (I know some of my students read my journal, but you're the first person I've come across here who has their own journal). Now the guessing game begins, who is this mysterious lady. All I've been able to work out is that you're probably faculty rather than a student. I'd guess you're about the same age as me or a little younger. How do I know this? Musical tastes.

Either that, or you're really Zenka, Queen of Darkness.

LOL...

I'm really sorry to say that all your guesses are wrong :) But that's really because of the strange disguise I keep putting myself in. First of all, I'm not a lady; that's just a nickname I've been using for some personal reasons hard to explain here. I'm not of the faculty; that means yes I'm a student who is only 20. However, I'm in the fine arts department; so our building is a bit far away from yours. And about musical tastes ? I'll take this as a compliment :)

Can I have the honor of adding you as a journal friend and ignore all the differences between us ?

I should have guessed - anyone who likes Patti Smith and Siouxie and the Banshees is either around forty years old or is an art student ;-)

Feel free to add me to your friends list - I'm touched anyone would think it was an honour! However, I'm afraid I can't add you to my list, because I use "friends only" entries partly for things I don't want colleagues, students, the recotr etc. to read (moaning about work and politics, for example). Consequently I decided I wouldn't add anyone in Bilkent (or perhaps even in Turkey) to my firends list. but I'll check up on your journal from time to time and say hello.

Ayrıca, gerçekten Karanlığın Kraliçesi Zenka olmadığından hala emin değilim ...

Haha, that's ok; the honor is mine in this case :) I wonder if there are any other people who are LJ members in Bilkent. I know of another student; but she's also in a department far from mine. Your students know about your journal ? Oh my, I think I'd keep it a secret from everybody at school. Sometimes I feel like I really shouldn't have added some of my turkish friends to my list, because it feels stupid and...strange. We sometimes see each other and they really don't need to learn what's going on inside my head unless I tell them that is...

:)

There's been quite a lot of discussion on LJ about degrees of privacy/anonymity, especially amongst those of us who teach. I go for graded degrees of self-exposure in LJ as in other things (for example, I'm quite happy to talk about myself in class, so long as it doesn't get too off-topic, but I don't socialise with students much outside class).

Oh come on. I listened to Patti Smith and Siouxsie & the Banshees in high school.

You can filter your entries so local people can't read certain of them. That's what I do ...
