Since a lot of my mail these days is to do with our Moodle system, Gmail is continually plying me with advertisements (sorry, "sponsored links") about e-learning. One such reads: "Solutions designed to engage and connect your employees with meaning." I have thought about this for some time and still have no idea what it could possibly mean.

Well that's clearly because you don't have a solution to connect you with meaning. Doh!

i think you need to purchase that product right away, or your life will remain a hollow shell devoid of meaning, forever.

If it is a solution that can connect you with meaning, then it must conduct, and the meaning must be charged. That's a little odd, because things that are conducive are usually the things that are themselves charged with meaning.

Oh gosh. You have Moodle, too? We switched to that halfway through my graduate studies, and it was HORRID. I hope your tech people were better at setting it up than ours was. (It's better now that I'm gone, of course. The most interesting side effect of the switch, though, was that the bulletin boards, which had been so active in the previous system, absolutely died. GSLIS profs were at a loss about how to get the discussions going again.)

I set up Moodle for my own courses about three years ago, after I realised that a lot of the things I'd been doing with my websites were reinventing the wheel. Later other teachers in my department started using it, and this semester we've set it up on a dedicated server and started using it campus-wide. I like it because it is very flexible (much better than the in-house software that some departments were using before). You can set up your course page to look pretty much how you like (especially if you know how to hack Moodle themes) and choose from a very wide range of activities and resources: in addition to the usual assignments and forums, you can have blogs, wikis, questionnaires, podcasts, whatever.

You're right, though, that the techies have to take care to set it up well, not to mention educating teachers in how to use it effectively. Fortunately, I'm on the tech team ;-)

Sounds like a dating service for the office, if you ask me.

That reminds me of when Willow asks Xander and Dawn to do some research:

WILLOW: Have you googled yet?
XANDER: Willow! She's only sixteen!

I play a regular flute. Silver. I've seen the baroque flute, but I didn't konw that's what it was called. Does it sound the same? How long have you played?

It sounds softer and fluffier. I played it a lot in the late 70s / early 80s, but don't play it much these days, since I don't have time to be involved with music much.
