I was too tired to watch a whole film, but I wanted the flavour of a film, so I watched the first 20 minutes of Amelie. The delightful thing about watching films like this is the knowledge that you and the film are on the same side.

So ... if I get some work-unimpeded time to myself of the weeked, I have the joy of watching all of Amelie, and maybe Fanny and Alexander!

What an excellent way to describe that feeling.

The funnything is, I couldn't say what the "side" in question is - it's just a feeling. There are plenty of films I enjoy greatly where I don't feel any connection with the film's creator(s) - Gladiator, for example, is a thoroughly enjoyable film, but I didn't think "Wow, Ridley Scott and I are really on the same wavelength." On the other hand, I've had that "same side" feeling about films as diverse as The Seven Samurai and Fanny and Alexander (in fact I once said that between them they say pretty much everything that's worth saying about the human condition).

I love Jeunet's films. Are you aware of the lovely Ms. [livejournal.com profile] tchatchke? She's a recent transplant to Paris, and quite good friends with Jean-Claude Dreyfus.

I'd be interested to hear your opinion on Amelie once you watch the whole thing. I had a love/hate relationship with it. I really hated the ending, though I can see how you'd like the ending if you didn't see what led up to it.

A francophile friend of mine chalked up my hatred of the film to cultural differences.

I saw it last summer, but again it was very late at night (and I'd drunk a lot of wine), so I don't remember the end too well. I think I liked it, though! I remember crying at one point, but that was probably the wine.

Having finally found time to watch the whole film, I can say that I liked the ending.

That's the in-depth analysis I was hoping for!

Amelie is a really good one. I saw it on a Valentine's date, like, two years ago...

*recommends acid house or he loves me he loves me not(the latter one i recommend because audrey tautou is acting as an erotomaniac girl and acting very well!)

Have you seen Dirty Pretty Things? I'm intrigued because (a) it's directed by Stephen Frears, who made the wonderful My Beautiful Laundrette, and (b) Audrey Tatou is pretending to be Turkish. OK, she looks Turkish, but can she really pull it off, or will it be as embarrassing as Tan Sağtürk pretending to be American?
