I just wrote on a student paper "Rowling is not saying the same thing with death-eaters as Tolkien is with orcs," and felt very thankful that I have the kind of job that lets me do this.
Actually one of my other students made the very good point that when fantasy authors consciously deal with race, they tend to oppose racism quite vehemently; it's when they aren't thinking about it that they end up reinforcing prejudices. Tolkien was a case in point.
