Race and ethnicity

When I first got into teaching English for academic purposes, I never thought I would be writing comments like this on a student paper:

The difference between race and ethnicity is controversial in politics and sociology but straightforward in fantasy: humans, dwarves, orcs etc, are races; Southrons, Calormenes and Dothraki are ethnic groups.

Man, I love my job!

Here's another from the same paper: "Damn! You've reminded me of the existence of battle,net and now I'm downloading Starcraft II. How am I going to read term papers if I'm playing Starcraft?"

Actually, I am being very disciplined and refusing to start Starcraft until the semester finishes. I still allow myself the occasional hour of Guild Wars, though.
