A good solution for playground bullying is an upper cut. (Bullies tend to throw hooks, leaving them vulnerable to this technique.) Of course this may get you in trouble with your teachers, but then teachers aren't allowed to hit you, so it's a good trade.

Actually, I vaguely remember my mother (who was a teacher!) saying something like "Hit them on the nose - it really hurts." Upper cuts are better though, because unless your bully has done some boxing (very unlikely) he really won't be expecting to be hit from that angle. It even throws people who've done karate etc., as few oriental martial arts have that kind of punch. I discovered it in Eagle Annual (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle_%28comic%29) and tried it out on our local bully, with amazing results.

I was never really physically abused by bullies. As Elaine says on Seinfeld, "Girls just psychologically torture each other until one of them develops an eating disorder." Still doesn't meant that I shouldn't have punched someone.
