Makes sense. There's a void on the left wing that used to be occupied by the Labour Party. I can understand why the Conservative Party would at least want to look as though they were trying to fill it.
Modern conservatism is rather the opposite of flattened hierarchies and empowered people: it is about authoritarianism with just the fig leaf of purported individualism (whether or not you can carry a concealed weapon in a church is of no moment to the uberrich) to flatter the foolish. But technology itself does not generate ideologies, it simply boosts dissemination. Ultimately, it's about who best gets the message out, and controlling the education system (our Governator's first act in office was to cut funding for labor studies programs in California universities while corporate funding has boosted biotech research) is definitely at the root. Though that's not new nor limited to California.
