Scanning texts and editing out the numerous resulting errors is not my favourite pastime, but it does sometimes give me cause for puerile delight; e.g., "When the Enemy returned our folk were driven from Ithilien, our fair domain east of the River, though we kept a foothold there and strength of anus." This conjured up an image of orcs trying vainly to penetrate the firmly clenched buttocks of the men of Gondor. Oh dear, I really am finding it hard to get back into this thing called "work".

The best typo I ever came across in LOTR was in the Braille version that my ex-husband used to get from the National Library for the Blind and read aloud to me. In the Mines of Moria, Frodo keeps thinking (correctly, of course) that he can hear something following them, but then at one point he stops and listens. The text in the Braille version, as well as I can quote it from memory, says this:

"But there was no sound, not even the half-imagined echo of a football."

They obviously just missed the famous match where the Uruk-hai beat the Misty Mountain Goblins 3-0.
