I've just been watching a programme on the placebo effect that informs me that red placebos work better than blue ones. Morpheus knew what he was doing ;-)

I wonder if it's a latent instinct related to most blue/black berries being safe to eat, but most red berries being poisonous.

Could be - looks dangerous, so must be effective. It's a bit like the idea that medicines are supposed to taste nasty.
