The server that I use for all my scripts, including the one that lets my students upload essays, crashed and burned today. This was unfortunate, since today is also the last day for one class to upload essays. I've been mailing our head sysadmin, and now I get:

OK.

Lets try "talk" on lists machine.

could u please logon to lists

the root password for lists is

Well obviously I'm not going to finish that sentence, but, like omg d00d, the guy trusts me with the root psswd!!!

if my experience with http://is.dal.ca/~canid/ is at all representative, once you're into a university machine you're in like flint.

oh ya: hope the outage didn't scorch you too bad ... that can be pretty hideous.

The problem, as [livejournal.com profile] cf pointed out, is that if someone actually gives you root privileges, you feel obliged not to use them. So far the only thing I've done with my su capacity is run programs in /usr/sbin.

Mmmm ya. "Heavy rests the head that bears the crown."

Do that machine use cgi-wrap? Running programs is nice. (Heh ... do you know SETI?)

p()rn server?

how about a p()rn server? cut in the sysadmin 15% of your gross and go with it till the rector actually notices what you're doing?

...either that or let psycho post her photos on it. which might just be the same as above ;)

its the problem with being trusted, huh? you feel that you have to actually deserve it.

Indeed. Give me a root password, and you can rest assured I will do nothing with it.

Who's psycho?
