Poverty

Poor people suck. They're dirty, they have terrible taste in clothes, and they want to steal your property. Homeless poor people are even worse, since they hassle you for change and have long-distance body odour. Getting rid of poor people will improve your life.

There are two ways to achieve this. The first is to physically eliminate all poor people. This has not been tried on a large scale, but a pilot scheme in Brazil involving homeless children turned out to be a waste of police time and ammunition. The second is to develop an economic system that produces as few poor people as possible. Note that this does not necessarily mean that we need to, in the noble words of President Bush, "make the pie higher." We can, and probably will, make people richer overall, but that in itself won't stop some people from being stubbornly poor relative to the rest of us. A poor person in the USA has more money than a middle-class person in Bangladesh, but who would you rather live next to: a bunch of trailer trash or a nice Bangladeshi schoolteacher? It seems that in order to get rid of nasty poor people, we need a system which effectively stops people from being poor, or at least ensures that as few people as possible are poor, and that those that are, are less poor. This system is called social democracy. Go to Stockholm and enjoy the spectacle of a clean, efficient city without lots of nasty, dirty poor people messing it up.

Development

The Third World is a luxury we can't afford. Everything that has been said about poor people applies to the Third World in spades. There are billions of horrible scrawny poor people out there just waiting for an opportunity to turn into suicide bombers. Let's develop their asses!

Racism

Let's face it, Black people are scary. They're bigger than us, and they have bigger muscles and, most importantly, bigger schlongs. Black people have been scaring White people since Shakespeare wrote Othello. But consider this: which is scarier, a Black professor of English Literature at Harvard or a Black crack-dealer waving an Uzi? Make Black people less scary - give them equal education and job opportunities!

Sexism

Whoever said "women - can't live with them, can't live without them" was lying. Any man who can operate a microwave and a washing machine can live without women. Women invented patriarchy as a way to sponge off men - let's give them equal opportunities and make the lazy cows work for their living!

check out www.thomaspmbarnett.com/ ... he's one of the leading policy wonks of the us military. he basically wants to chop the us military into two services: ass kicking and rebuilding. He posits that our best choice right now is reducing the area of the third world as fast as possible...

"reducing the area of the third world" ???

What's he gonna do with it ?

Bury it under a sub-urb of L.A. ?

Send it into outer space ?

um. the mind boggles.

how about, for starters:
sweatshop jobs for women so that they are more valuable driving education of girls? (which can then lead to better jobs etcetera)
medical facilities?
internet access?
ability to travel for work?
education?
roads?

Turkey might well be getting out of the 2.5 world soon. It makes me happy.

You don't have to accept that the third world is an unchanging place. Korea left a decade or two ago. The Ivory Coast came back. As did Liberia. Mozambique is leaving.

the sad thing is that the bush admin uses a similar set of values in it's decision making, or so it appears.

Yes - I was just trying to show how you can start with the same premises and reach completely opposite conclusions.

unfortunately for some people/organizations, the premise is just an excuse to achieve the conclusion they desire.

Cicero said that the most moral and the most personally advantageous actions were the same thing, and if they don't appear to be it's only because you are looking for too short term an advantage. I think there's a lot to that.

Co-incidentally, I was teaching that very thing in class last week. Cicero's "On Duties" is one of the set books for our second-year students.

If anyone wants to discuss people from Leeds, please come and visit me......your body will be returned to your loved ones.................... well most of it :-)

I'm a member of the sadly-languishing [livejournal.com profile] pomophobia, and in its dormancy have neglected to check your own page as often as I should. It's just as I feared: I am missing conspicuous brilliance all the time, here.

Only one cure for it (since improved memory and the strain of repeated mouse clicks are apparently beyond me): I'm adding you to my Friends list, and recommending to my wife, [livejournal.com profile] senryu, that she do the same. Please feel free to reciprocate or not as you will (but I bet you'd enjoy her current post on the distinction between martial arts and film fighting -- Cath does both).

I only wish we could get this post onto Faux News -- maybe they wouldn't see the point until too late. :D

Regards, AJ

Alas such inescapable logic belongs to the now discredited "reality-based" community and, according to those in power, is not the way the world works anymore.
