Yay, a snow day! Well, only a semi-snow day. The government announced last night that primary and secondary schools would be closed, but it was up to universities to make their own decisions. My wife, who is a high school teacher, was dancing round the room. Come this morning I was none the wiser, so went in on the bus. It turned out that morning classes had been cancelled, but afternoon classes were supposed to proceed as normal, as though any student who had spent the morning in bed would be likely to trudge through the snow just to catch a couple hours of lectures.

To my surprise, half of my students actually turned up to my 12.40 class, so I did a laid-back lesson on the definite article, then let them go after the break. Well, to be more exact, bowed to the fact that most of them weren't going to return after the break.

Anyway, there's only one more day to go before Eid al-Fitr (or "Seker Bayram" - "Sugar holiday" - as they call it here). Unfortunately we only get the Monday and Tuesday off this year, but we're going away anyway, largely to avoid my mother-in-law (who recently threatened to have me run out of the country and has accused me of performing black magic on her, with voodoo dolls, no less!). A friend recommended this thermal spring place not far from Ankara, so I can spend a long weekend soaking in hot mineral water, easing all the muscles I've pulled in martial arts training. Nice.
