New Toy

My new computer has arrived, and very pretty it is too, all black and grey, with a sexy LCD monitor and wireless mouse and keyboard*. I've been spending the last god knows how many hours installing software. Mandrake 9.2 installed without problems, except that I have no sound. That's not a major headache, since I'm only using the onboard sound until my soundcard arrives after the holiday (that's Eid, not Thanksgiving).

On the other hand, all attempts to install Windows 98 have gone nowhere. I have a sneaking suspicion my motherboard won't work with them - time to go a-googling.

* From Microsoft, believe it or not! I may hate their operating systems, but they make nice hardware.

I got an AMD 750Mhz with Windows98IIse which runs all my various sound cards without any great problem, but 'stutters' when I stream more than 20 stereo tracks (16bit 44.1khz), and rather than run the risk of landing myself with a chipset that refuses W98 and makes me update all my softs (many "ahhh-Jim-Lad!") I've bought a G4. I'll keep the AMD and run the two side-by-side - rumour has it a G4 accepts a PC as 'guest' on appletalk [ethernet]). It arrives this week, so I'm all excited, like you.

Hope things are cool and friendly in Ankara.

If your googling turns up any solutions to the 'MS-built-in-obsolescence-syndrome' give me a whistle - I have friends that have fallen into that pit.

Hmmm...are you just getting a black screen when trying to play it???? if so, (cos i did the first time) you need the Nvida Media Center download. Dont ask me what it does, it just works...Failing that a call to Dr. rodney will solve the problem.

Failing that. i will personally buy you a copy and ship it out to you.

OK, I've solved the problem. I'm going to play through the single-player scenario in Windows to get the hang of the game, then I'll download the Linux client and see if I can get that working, then eventually I may be joining you guys online.
