Somebody really has it in for Turkey - two bombs in Istanbul a few days ago, then two more today. Nothing going on here in Ankara so far, but they've still cancelled classes (though not, unfortunately, staff meetings) for today and tomorrow.

I phoned some friends in Istanbul to make sure they were all right, and checked LJ to make sure [livejournal.com profile] kozizi was OK, then reminded myself to keep things in perspective - terrorists would have to do a lot more than this to rival the fatalities from road accidents in Istanbul.

Yes, I thought of you...

It's been about 13 years since I was last in 'Bul, so I've lost touch with the folks I knew back then. I love that city. I sold about 4 travel articles about my various stays there.

Funny that they hit mostly british targets this time. I know that the yanks are fiercely resented by some...

Bush is at the bottom of all this. So much for his 'making the world safe against innernashnul tourrrists'.

Sucker.

Keep yer' 'ead down.

Have a good weekend.

Let's not deprive Blair of his fair share of the blame. While he may be acting as Bush's lap-dog, he's just as big a fundie as Bush, if not more so.

Zaten haber programlarını seyretsem, midem bulanır. BBC, CNN-Türk filan izlerim, ama Show Haber v.s. seyredemem. Hele bugün.

Hope you, and yours, stay well.

Man, the wife and I were considering Turkey as a sabattical destination, next year, but it's not looking promising.

As a real danger, terrorism is pretty negligible. It hit the headlines, but if you're thinking about Istanbul, the real danger is traffic, not terrorists.

It's a bit like plane crashes - because a lot of people die at the same time very spectacularly, people get the impression that planes are dangerous, whereas in fact they're much safer than cars.

Yeah, I'm not terribly concerned about direct terrorism, more just travelling as Americans. It's always a liability (well-earned, unfortunately), and now more than ever.

Glad you posted -- I replied to one of your comments in my LJ asking how you were doing. Sounds like you've got a healthy perspective on it, but it still really sucks. I've never been to Istanbul (or anywhere else in Turkey, or many places in the world, for that matter), but everyone I know who has been there adored it, particularly the people. They didn't say anything about the traffic, however.

I heard somewhere that Mexico City is (even) worse.
