I've noticed that LJ members are addicted to surveys (to the extent that it has almost become a netiquette issue if entr00pi's recent postings are anything to go by). Well this time, having learnt that I have an 87% probability of being heterosexual, that the religion which would suit me best would be Liberal Quakerism (odd choice for a martial artist) and that I identify with Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (no surprise) and Eowyn in The Lord of the Rings (actually, I had a big crush on her when I was a kid) .... I've decided to survey myself. Anyone else who wants to do this is welcome to do so, but I can't be bothered to write up a proper survey form. Here's the question:
Name five films you have seen five times, explaining why. What line from the film sticks in your head, and what is your sole criticism of the film?

  1. The Seven Samurai Says everything worth saying about life that isn't said in Fanny and Alexander.
Quote: "We are like the wind."
Criticism: Overacting on the part of the peasants.
  2. Big Trouble in Little China Silly fights, cheesy decor, goofy dialogue and wonderful music.
Quote: "Chinese got a lot of hells."
Criticism: They never made a sequel.
  3. The Matrix Stylish clothes, aesthetic violence, geeky philosophy.
    Quote: "There is no spoon."
Criticism: Silly pseudoscience - haven't these guys heard of the third law of thermodynamics?
  4. Diva Wonderful cinematography, interesting characters, triumph of style over substance.
    Quote: "Ma Rolex!"
Criticism: Triumph of style over substance.
  5. Dirty Dancing Great dancing, a sweet and surprisingly sexy heroine, and the bad guy reads Ayn Rand.
Quote: "I know these people, Baby. They are rich, and they are mean."
Criticism: They didn't have synthesisers in 1963 (a Yamaha DX7, if my ears don't deceive me).

Interpretation

You have a strong violent streak, moderated by a desire to protect the weak and down-trodden. You have problems adjusting to reality. You would like to live in a blue attic, smoking Gauloise and doing jigsaw puzzles. You wish you could dance like Patrick Swayze, and you have the hots for Jennifer Grey. You're a Commie geek.

Who reads Ayn Rand in Dirty Dancing? I've never noticed and I've seen it more than five times, but only on the video. :-)
