Apologies for the recent hiatus in my userpics - I was uploading a couple of pictures and must have buggered it up. They're back (fingers crossed), with the exception that my old default picture has mysteriously vanished. Oh, well, I'm not bothered; in fact, I felt a little uncomfortable about having it as the default picture. My userpics are taken from various phases of my life, the one of my explaining something in front of a computer being the most recent, but after a few people I know in the material world said "Oh, you look much younger in that picture" (tactless gits) it occurred to me that some people might think I was posting ten-year-old pictures so I would look younger and get to pull birds (that's "chicks" or "babes" for American readers). Apart from the fact that no hot babes would have gone for that hair, this was not my intention (if it had been my intention, I would have taken a recent photograph, put it through the GIMP to add a few more grey hairs, and put more Britishisms into my writing).

In contrast, I visited my sister-in-law's soon-to-be-ex-husband's Yahoo page (no evil intent, just larking around). The guy is listed as single, with a couple of years knocked off his age, and his motto (or whatever they call it in Yahoo) is - wait for it - "I know what it is to be young."

I'd like to think of a pithy way to express my reaction to this, but all I can think of at the moment is:

(a) ROTFLMAO
(b) Bwahahahahaaa!!!

Aww, don't worry, Robin. We like you no matter what your pics are. =) (I see you like vampires!)

I have one pic of myself I kinda like; it does basically look like me but it was taken several years ago (1996, I think). I've been debating on using it as an icon for similar reasons: I look awfully young in it, and it has a kind of "come hither" expression. But then, I think I was wearing something lingerie-like at the time. :Þ (and hubby took the photo)

So your soon-to-be ex-BIL is lying in his ad at Yahoo, huh? ::roll eyes:: Twit.

hmm. I'm ignorant. Why don't you want to attract hot babes?

And for the record, I thought that picture was hot.

Why don't you want to attract hot babes?

Because:
  1. I'm married;
  2. I'm twice the age of most of the hot babes I'm attracted to;
  3. If I really wanted to get hot babes, the campus where I work is bursting to the seams with them, so the Internet would be superfluous;
  4. It's too much bother.

On the other hand, being admired by hot babes is good for my ego, so thanks for the compliment.

I'm too round (according to general popular opinion 'round here) and on the border of being too old to be a hot babe (bird, chick, etc.), but I too thought the photo in that icon was quite becoming.

You forgot emotionally intelligent enough to know better.

My answers to such a question would be along the lines of, 1) I'm allergic to latex and probably every other kind of local contraceptive device; 2) I don't need an *oops* pregnancy or a disease!, and 3) yes, being married, it would most likely be a limited fling... to which I would probably subject myself to a dangerous level of guilt. Who needs it.

And the age thing isn't always an issue, ya know -- for either sex! ;)

I could make you some awesome icons if you want. :) You'd have to post some pics or give me a link, but really: I am the

Icon Goddess! :D ...as long as you don't want animation.

Thanks for the offer (I noticed your icon were very good) but what can one do with a picture other than reduce it to icon size, tweak things like contrast or sharpness, or maybe mangle it in the GIMP/Photoshop (as I did with this one)?

emotionally intelligent enough to know better.

Hmm, not so sure about that one ;-)

You're right that the age thing isn't always an issue, but it can complicate things. Ceteris paribus, I can be attracted to women much younger than me*, and occasionally they find me attractive; the problem is that usually ceteris is very, like, un-paribus. (I am so watching too much Buffy. I watch so much Buffy that I'm turning into a, um, super-too-much-Buffy-watcher.)

* In a very old post, I defined my age limit as "too old for a trainer bra and too young for a Zimmer frame."

Well, of course you do have to like the pic to begin with before someone mangles perfects it in photoshop. :)

I agree about the age thing. I've had some experience with that, myself as either the older OR the younger one. It's too weird if a guy's many years younger; they're just not mature enough. In fact, even when they're a few older years if one's only in their teens or twenties, they're still not mature enough! I guess I've always liked older men... aged like a fine wine. Must be a Sean Connery thing. ;) Even when I was 14 I would've DIED for Clint Eastwood, and he was probably... 30-something?

Okay, I'm really showing ignorance here, but what is 'ceteris paribus'? Something in latin, I presume? Sorry but I don't watch Buffy that much. I liked it for about one season, although I really did like Giles. They ruined Willow and then Angel and whats-her-name left to do their own show. I don't think David Boreanaz (sp-?) has enough charisma. However, I do think Sarah M.G. did a great job in the movie "Cruel Intentions."

Oh, and what's a Zimmer frame? *L*

"Ceteris paribus" = "all things being equal".
"Zimmer frame" = "aluminium structure used by invalids to help them walk".
