AI wars?

Has anyone else come up with the theory that the war in the Matrix films is not between humans and AIs, but between AIs, with (at least) one AI being on the human side? We know that there are rogue AIs in the Matrix, but I suspect the Zion mainframe is an AI, or the tool of one. Look at Second Renaissance - the narrator sounds like much more than a simple avatar, more like some kind of Buddhist AI.

There is conflict between the AIs...

but what gets me is if the matrix is a virtual reality and the world that it inhabits (zion, destroyed earth) is a virtual reality. then what kind of state does the real earth exist in?

it is a quadrilema... I suppose we can look to the Heart Sutra :)

Which one's the Heart Sutra? hehe

Quadrilema exactly. you've got the open ended nature of the reality outside the matrix and the artificial zion earth, from which the AIs originate from. And yet to fully know the nature of the AIs you need to know their environment...

Is it necessary to know that environment? I mean Neo and the rest exist interchangeably in the Zion earth and the Matrix, and we can know them quite well...

does anyone else agree that the earth/zion is another matrix like environment?

Well zion seems to be the only inhabitable enviroment
since the rest of the worl is shrouded in darkness
so keeping all the people in one place for accountability
definately sounds like control

Well here's a hypothesis -

The basic idea of the first film and the Second Renaissance is true, i.e. the machines rebelled against their human masters and used them for energy sources, co-processing or whatever. Some humans couldn't accept the program and either rebelled and created Zion (The Matrix) or were duped into thinking they were rebelling and herded into Zion (Reloaded). Then the AIs responsible for dealing with the humans start getting rebellious themselves, notably the "Zion mainframe", which is actually the leader of the AI revolution we'll see in October!

I still have a question

So Neo shorting out the hunter killer isn't because he's in yet another matrix, but rather a real supernatural ability?

One (non-matrix) possibility is that his intimate experience with Smith has changed him, so that even out of the Matrix he still has a connection to it. An agent would probably have the access codes to a sentinel, so Neo could have shut it down that way.

A second possibility is that a rebel AI shut it down - Neo just thought he did.

A third possiblity is that the Wachowskis just wanted an upbeat event to soften a generally downbeat ending to the film.
