I just downloaded a cute program called TDFSB, wich I assume stands for "Three Dimensional File System Browser". It enables you to fly around a 3D model of your computer's file system in a way which is exactly how I visualised "cyberspace" when I first read Gibson's Neuromancer:

I'd assumed this would be a nice toy but have no practical use, then I noticed that humungous obelisk entitled "neohomes.tar.gz". This explained why I had so little space left on my harddrive - I'd made a massive backup file and forgotten to move it off the computer.

And now, I evilly imprison my students in cyberspace ....

I could waste hours with this program. Its only shortcoming (apart from the fact that I can't get fullscreen mode to work) is limited functionality. You can make it play any mp3 files you come across, but apart from that, you can't do the kind of tings you'd want to do with files, like move or delete them. I suppose that's just as well, though - I've made enough mistakes just typing in commands, I dread to think what I'd do to my files while zooming around in three dimensions. I imagine future versions will allow you to do more things.

so are you going to interview me or what?

I'd been putting off, as so many people have interviewed you, I didn't want to duplicate questions. but since you insist ...

1. Explain your fascination with The Matrix.
2. Which do you prefer, Buffy or Angel, and why?
3. If you had the opportunity to become a vampire, would you take it, and if so, would you be a BTVS-type vampire or an Anne Rice-type vampire? If not, why not?
4. If you could make any book into a film, which one would you choose, and why?
5. Of the things about yourself that you didn't choose (age, class, race, gender, nationality etc.) which affects your sense of identity the most?

heh, that's pretty cool. It cracks me up how much the imagery from Tron has infiltrated pretty much any conceptualization of cyberspace.

Oh god yes, how could I have forgotten Tron?

That is awesome! It reminds me of what I would have imagined cyberspace to look like in the book Neuromancer had I not played the computer game first, which looked in parts, remarkably similar. actually it probably looked absolutely crap. but my memory tells me it was fantastic.

I'm sure the original BBC Micro version of Elite wasn't as good as I remember, but in my memory it is still the ultimate computer game, just as Battlezone is the ultimate arcade game. I must have a fetish about green wireframe graphics.

I'm thinking of putting a copy on my next course website with the caption "This is what happens to students who don't use proper citation methods."

The home page is at
http://www.hgb-leipzig.de/~leander/TDFSB/

You can download tarballs from there for Linux, FreeBSD or BeOS, but I got an RPM through one of the Mandrake contrib mirrors - much easier. I hear there are Debian packages available as well.

I'm afraid there is no version for Windows or Macintosh, though since it's Open Source, I wouldn't be surprised if someone ported it eventually.

Not. I was about to download the demo of Total War: Medieval, then realised that it required 1.7 GB, and I only have 650 MB on my Windows partition. NWN requires a higher spec computer than I have in all areas save perhaps RAM.
