Well, the uptake to the "How compatible are you with Solri?" quiz was about as high as the Poles' turnout for the EC referendum. Maybe I need to get out the GIMP and produce some cheesy linkable images for people to post in their journals. Anyway, here are the results.

[livejournal.com profile] aspen_fox 80%
[livejournal.com profile] chippiex 75%
[livejournal.com profile] chr0me_kitten 75%
[livejournal.com profile] arya 70%
[livejournal.com profile] from_ashes 55% (after changing her answer)

The criteria were largely arbitrary, but the following played a part.

1. Bach and Deep Purple score points, The Modern Jazz Quartet scores more points (becuase fewer people have heard of them). Justin Timberlake and İbrahim Tatlıses lose major points; the rest are neutral.

2. Linux scores major points, of course, as does Free BSD. Windows loses major points. Macintosh is neutral. All the others score minor points.

3. Science fiction novels and philosophical tracts score major points. Detective novels and programming manuals score minor points. Romantic novels lose points; Ayn Rand and L. Ron Hubbard lose serious points.

4. The silly ones gain points.

5. Trick question - you don't get points for choosing an answer but for identifying the quotations. All of the answers are neutral except for (a), which loses big points - I got fed up of that kind of stuff way back in the 1970s.

Update[livejournal.com profile] regyt weighs in at 80%!

So upgrade to Linux! You can still keep Windows on a disk partition for playing games etc..

My computer already has a million partitions! Actually, we're thinking of upgrading anyway. Need more memory and a faster processer. What exactly is Linux? :)

Strictly speaking, Linux is the kernel developed by Linus Torvalds and his motley crew; in practice it is an operating system (more accurately called GNU/Linux), a movement (more accurately known as Open Source or Free Software), a way of life ... [someone pour cold water on me quickly!]

There are a lot of web pages introducing Linux for newbies, most of which either aren't really for newbies and try to tell you too much, or aren't for anyone in particular and don't tell you very much. This one (http://linux.com/article.pl?sid=02/03/09/1727250) at linux.com isn't bad.

Why use Linux? Don't get me started ... ;-)

why use linux?

"Why use anything else?" is the question I prefer to ask :-)

Well with Linux, you don't get the famous "Windows experience", like when the whole screen goes a pretty blue colour. I kind of miss that ;-)
