Today is Republic Day (well, strictly speaking it was yesterday, since midnight passed some time back, but it's still today by Subjective Solri Time). This means:

1. It is the 79th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. This means that despite all its problems, we live in a state where people can vote, women can wear what they want and no mullah can interfere with my right to drink raki. Three cheers for Mustafa Kemal!

2. It is the 10th anniversary of my meeting my wife. It was actually a Halloween party, but since the 31st fell on a night before an early class, we moved it forward. Funnily enough, neither of us were in the mood to meet a new significant other. Nalan got dragged along by her friend who was going out with my flatmate. I was comfortably unattached and planning to remain so, and also had flu, which meant that I retired to my room as soon as was polite. We were thrown together by a drunken Australian whose rambling advances induced Nalan to seek sanctuary and coherent conversation in my room. The rest is history. Three cheers for drunken Australians!
