In my favourite South Park episode (the rainforest one) I love the way Cartman takes a stick to any animal he encounters, shouting "Bad snake! Bad snake!" or "Bad three-toed sloth! Bad three-toed sloth!"

Well, I have to beat myself and say "Bad Solri! Bad Solri!" I promised myself that I would not drink today, since I'm just recovering from flu and my immune system doesn't want to be depressed by alcohol. But no, here I am, sipping the raki again. What is it about this drink? I like beer and wine, but I don't get the urge to drink them every night. It can't be the aniseed, because I've tried ouzo and pernod and been highly unimpressed (to mollify any Greeks reading this, I've heard that what is served as ouzo in Greek restaurants in England isn't real ouzo, so I shouldn't judge).

Ouzo vs. Raki

I had a bad experience in Greece with ouzo which means that now , if I drink ouzo I move from sobriety to hangover without an intervening period of drunkenness. I thought raki would be the same, but it's not. I put it down to the impression I have that raki is rougher and less sugared than ouzo. In any case it's nicer - even if somebody says it's 'the same thing'. (It's not.) Are you a fan of 'Efes Pilsner' - I used to love that. My favourite turkish wine (the one that I can remember) is Villa Doluca. I did notice that almost anything that came from the island of Bozcaada was highly drinkable too.

I'm not so keen on Efes Pilsner, since my taste in beers goes to bitters rather than lagers, but Efes have now produced a passable brown ale called Efes Dark.

Villa Doluca is nice, as is Çankaya, and just about anything from Cappadocia. In contrast, Ankara Whisky is the most evil thing I've ever tasted. Many years ago, my flatmate and I bought a bottle on our way to a party hosted by a Turkish girl we were both trying to chat up. I had one shot, gagged, and vowed never to even go within smelling distance of it again. My flatmate drank about half the bottle, pulled his trousers down, broke an antique vase and had to be bundled forcibly into a taxi. OK, I didn't get very far with the girl either, but at least we stayed friends.
