This is so tasteless I had to link to it. The U.S. bomb the hell out of Afghanistan, install a murderous regime of warlords and Islamic fundamentalists, then get the natives to weave flags. I love it, but I'm about to bring up my raki.

I have an afghan on my bed. My mom knit it for me. It's neither woolen nor colorful, though.

"Afghan" is a common American term for a knitted throw rug or blanket, hence the confusion. It's one of those sad, sick cultural dissonances that crop up now and again - I've seen several Americans pale at the concept of a "Family Butcher", for instance.

Even so, the average P.E. teacher would pause for thought before trying to make money out of such a thing.

When I was a young hippy, an "Afghan" was a long sheepskin coat, with the wool on the inside and usually some embroidery on the outside. I think they mainly came from Nepal, and I've certainly never seen an Afghan wearing one.
