robinturner: Dawn of the Dead (zombie)

I went to see the latest Resident Evil film yesterday because I was in a bad mood and thought a bit of carnage would take me out of it. I was right: the film is by no means perfect, but it left me with a warm fuzzy glow. To make it simple, here's Resident Evil: Afterlife in bullet points.

Good Points

  • It's in 3D.
  • It has lots of cheesy 3D effects so you don't forget it's in 3D. I know for many this would be a bad point, but I'm still at the stage where I enjoy cheesy 3D effects like bullets flying out of the screen. I'll probably change my mind eventually.
  • Lots of visual puns and references to other films (e.g. The Matrix).
  • Zombies.
  • Those zombie dogs from the first film. Gotta love'em.
  • Milla Jovovitch kicking ass.

Not-so-good Points

  • Like a Beethoven symphony, they just couldn't manage to let the film stop. I lost track of how many endings it has.
  • Milla Jovovitch gets into a shower and doesn't take her clothes off.
  • It could have had more zombie dogs.

I haven't seen a 3D movie since Captain Eo.

I could use a violent movie right about now.

I was interested in seeing this film, but I haven't seen the first three in the franchise, so I was wondering... would it suck too much for me to start with this one (I'm not likely to go back and watch the others...)?

Oh, wait... maybe I'm talking about Biohazard and these are different franchises?

I don't know the Biohazard series, but basically all zombie franchises have the same scenario:

1st film: Evil corporation creates a zombie virus (directly or indirectly as a result of waste products etc.). Zombies attack people. Heroes fight zombies and either escape or somehow contain the zombie problem.
Middle film or films: Zombies start to take over the world. Humans live in gated communities, islands etc.
Last film: Only a few humans left. It is their task to rebuild civilisation. Possible twist - zombies develop intelligence and start their own civilisation.

So, what you're saying is jumping in on the 4th isn't going to negatively impact my enjoyment of the film..?

Not really - a few things made me go "huh?" because I haven't seen the third film, but there are no show stoppers. It's like you don't need to have seen Night of the Living Dead to enjoy Day of the Dead. Basically it's your standard adrenaline and eye-candy formula, so it's not like, say, trying to pick up the plot of Lost in Season 6.

Awesome. The last thing I want to do is fork out another 300JPY for the 3D glasses to see Season 6 of Zombie Lost without having seen the other 5 first...
