Language Interface Stupidity
Monday, September 6th, 2010 11:05 pmI am used to the idiotic assumption by websites that because I have a Turkish IP number I must want to read the site in Turkish, even if I type www.somecorp.com not www.somecorp.com.tr. I mean, anyone who is in Turkey must speak Turkish, musn't they? As it happens, I do, so it's a minor irritation, especially since there is usually a drop-down menu somewhere to change the language. Now, however, I am faced with sites that assume I can only speak one language. Having convinced ovi.com that I really would prefer to read their content in English, I try to download a Turkish app and they won't let me, saying "Sorry, this item is not available in your language." It's a package of Turkish emergency phone numbers, so this is hardly surprising.

GOOD HAPPY huh huh huh ...
I've had the good fortune of international communications in various domains using various media and venues and am frequently gob-smacked at others' facility with English. Born into a French Canadian community I am only just very barely bilingual.
OTOH I've gotten back into I18n via a sofware project. Turns out the international effort to make software accessible is being frustrated by rather antique system design.
