One of my students read my entry about chocolate and left a bar on my desk during break. That was so sweet!

My students this semester are a lovely bunch - very bright, very friendly and lots of fun. They even put up with my weird pedagogic methods, like having them give each other shoulder massages to introduce Epicureanism, or pulling hair to test Stoicism. We're now onto part 2 of the "happiness" course, which is on mysticism - should I get everyone to meditate, I wonder? Maybe, since it includes medieval Christian mystics, I should distribute hair shirts and knotted cords, then we can parade round campus as a group of penitentes.

This seems like a good way to teach. How can you forget these things with such active participation?!

It's OK as far as it goes, but I have to teach Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality (in a different course) next week, and am trying despeartely to find ways to bring it to life. Should I say "Hey, let's be noble savages" and have everyone take thier clothes off? Maybe I'll try that one day, but only when I've got another job lined up.
