Today the weather was beautiful, the only work I had to do was attending a seminar, and I didn't have a care in the world. This naturally meant I had to find a care, so I started thinking about physical pain. "Hmmm, all this seems very good," I thought "but what if I were in pain now? Would it seem so wonderful?"

Now I have toothache. Talk about forethought.

I would swear I know a koan or a parable about this. I can't remember where I learned it though. (May have been [livejournal.com profile] beckyb's cousin, a Montana woman who is a Tibetan-Buddhist lama and an abbess in Brazil.) It goes like this:
Imagine you have a toothache, or imagine the last time you had a toothache (quoth the teacher).

It hurts, doesn't it? It hurts so much.

O, how I wish this toothache were gone! you moan. If only I did not have a toothache, I would be so happy!

Now consider (said the master): you do not have a toothache.

So why aren't you happy?

No, I think it was coincidence. But I suppose it could be the gods punishing my hubris ;-)

Nice. I'll reconsider it when I no longer have toothache ;-)

Hah, you are too funny. "But what if I were in pain now?" A man after my own heart.

You & I don't seem to have much luck with our gnashers. Another (old) crown fell off the other day. But it only took a few minutes to glue it back. Good job I didn't swallow it.
Pain is a message from your body to fix something. OK - got the message so belt up! M
