I googled for The Three Johns (prompted by a comment I left in [livejournal.com profile] kristian's journal) and was pleased to find a couple of web pages devoted to this quirky 1980s Leeds band, although I couldn't find the lyrics to "Nausea" (their version of the Patti Smith song "Gloria", with lyrics about Jean-Paul Sartre). Unfortunately, though, The World Cup Willie Quartet vanished leaving no trace on the web, which is a shame, si,nce they had some great songs. One of my favourites was the Wham! song, sung to the tune of "I Don't Want Your Freedom":

What does Andrew do in Wham?
What's the job requiyerment?
He can't sing and he can't play,
He's just a bloody ornament.
What does Andrew do-oo-oo ....?
Oh what does Andrew do in Wham?

I once did a guest appearance as a fascist country singer. The song was called "Soldier of Fortune" went something like this:

I was born on a farm in the country,
Bad Ass* was where I was reared.
We had to work hard, but we kept on our guard
'Gainst the bums and the pinkoes, the niggers and queers.
But now I'm a soldiyer of fortune
Mah only trade is mah gun.
So Ahm goin' off far, to Nickeraggewar **
To kill me some commies and have me some fun.

God bless America, and God bless the Contras as well
If we all pull together, we'll win this ole war
Or we'll blow their whole country to Hell.

There was more, but I won't inflict it on you.

* Apparently, there really is a place called Bad Ass.
** This was in the early 80s.

Did you write that ?

Yup, it's a Solri original.

Here's the rest (you have to remember that it's referring to politics circa 1980):

Mah very first foreign assignment
Was down in the African Cape
Ah fought for what's right, defending the Whites
And indulging a little in looting'n'rape.
But then Ah went over to Chile
Workin' behahnd prison walls.
Upholdin' the law and protectin' the poor
By delivrin' high voltages straight to thar balls.

God bless America etc.

So now here Ah am in the jungle -
Me and mah gun and mah buddy.
It's a great life out here, drinkin' whusky and beer
Though Ah wish that it wusn't so muddy.
This mornin' we took out a village.
We ain't proud of what we done did.
But we're on a mishun to smash Comyoonizum
And that includes priests 'n nuns, old folks and kids.

God bless America, God bless Ronnie Reagan as well,
If we all pull together, we'll win thi ole war
Or we'll blow the whole planet to Hell.

I think I remember that. Was it at "The Fox and Newt"?

There was a gig at the Duchess to celebrate Bob getting out of jail.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that one. I wonder what dodgy deals Bob's up to these days. Smuggling iPods into North Korea, perhaps.

When I see them it's not hard to figure ....
Which one's Roy Rogers and which one's trigger ...
Which one's listed in my spare part handbook ...
