I am used to getting spam telling me that my breasts or genitalia are too small, but this is damned insulting:

"Your operation system is Windows98 or Windows2000 - you face a risk."

The funny part is that they then tell me I can reduce the risk by buying Windows XP!

Note also that the author of these spams thinks an operating system is an "operation system".

I still don't understand why they do this when they have no obvious financial gain by it

I heard XP described as :

"A sponge for viruses".

(I know, it should be virii.)

No, it shouldn't be "virii". You were right the first time: the plural of "virus" is "viruses". Even if we were to use a Latinate plural, it would be "viri", not "virii" ("virii" would be the plural of "virius").

"Viri"

I've just forgotten enough of my schoolboy latin that this almost comes as news to me... (I avoided latin when I did classics at uni - frankly, with a few notable exceptions, roman history is rather dull).

"viri" -> 'virile' ???

Just a thought...
