Satanic strolls

One of the more pleasant parts of my stay in England has been walking in the hills. Interestingly, all three places I've visited have something to do with the Devil.

First we went to Ogwen and skirted the Devil's Kitchen (photos in [livejournal.com profile] maggie_lucy's journal). This involved a long but pleasant car ride through Wales, singing along, Wayne's World-style, to Beethoven's Fifth and speculating as to why Welsh traffic lights have turqoise instead of green (we wondered, Whorfianly, if it was because Welsh has only one word, glas for both blue and green).

Our next devilish excursion was with my brother's family to the Stiperstones, small but rocky hills in South Shropshire, whose main feature is the Devil's Chair. Legend has it that the Devil decided to destroy the town of Shrewsbury by dropping a load of rock son it, but on his way, he got tired and sat down on a large, chair-like rock ona hill. All the rocks fell out of his apron, creating the Stiperstones.

Finally we went up the Long Mynd yesterday, passing a gully called the Devil's Mouth, which goes up to the reservoir. However, this time we took the path to the right, going up the Mynd to a Neolithic road. Lots of nice lighting effects, heather, sheep, birds of prey etc.

Might have been a permissions problem. I think I've fixed it but can't be sure, as tese pictures are on not on a normal Unix-type server, but on Yahoo's system, which is "user-friendly".

Shame you didn't think about visiting the most Evil place in England (Leeds), or at least let some of the people living there know you were over. Maybe if i get a big dictionary and learn lots of new words that only 1% of the population can understand you would have remembered. Oh well, be happy on your birthday and remember..... "you get to be the person you are by the foundations of your past".

I did post something about getting together with people in England. Problem was that getting over here and various other expenses left me completely broke, so I decided to stay put. Oh well, maybe next year.

I wanted to point out this post to you, from a soldier in Iraq. Apparently, several Turkish citizens were hit in a recent mortar attack in Iraq, and one of them died.

Odds are good that you won't see that in the press, however.

I did hope to get down to see you but, um, things happened. There will be an explanation in my journal later on.
