I'm thinking about theming my next ENG 101 course around warriors (cheesy provisional title: "From Homer to Xena"). The sections are as follows:

1. The transition from primitive warrior figures to medieval chivalry (Homer vs. Arthur);
2. Martial arts, Buddhism, Taoism etc. - sublimation of kicking ass into spiritual development;
3. Women warriors - trendy gender-bending stuff.

For #3, I could really do with some texts that deal with female warriors without being pretentious, pomo and hard to read. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I haven't read Antonia Fraser's Boadicea's Chariot, so I don't know if it's pomo or hard to read, but I'm guessing not. Pretentious, I won't guess, as I don't remember much of the book reviews I read fifteen years ago. (One fragment that sticks with me is that one reviewer was all "oh, really!" over a penultimate chapter on Margaret Thatcher.)

Hmm, I don't know a lot about Tara. Definitely a strong figure, but the stories I've heard about her involved using magic rather than physically kicking ass.

Thanks for the compliment! However, in my class you would lose marks for using capitals for emphasis ;-)

Subject headings should be in bold, and in sentence case
