I've just updated my essay Who is a native speaker, and what is it they speak?. Or rather, I've done the opposite, since most of what I did (aside from smartening up the HTML) was to go back to the original essay I wrote back in 1997, find the footnotes that had somehow got lost in the move from Word to LyX to HTML, and put the more interesting ones into the body of the text. I therefore coin a new word: downdating.

I'm a bit surprised, but the word already exists. Google turns up lots of papers with titles like Accurate Downdating of a QR Decomposition and A note on downdating the Cholesky factorization. I get the impression that it is being used as an antonym for updating, whatever that means.
