Every so often, Nalan and I discover an iconic TV series somewhat later than the rest of the world and end up watching several seasons back to back. We did this with
Lost,
Supernatural and
Fringe, and have now started on
Revolution, which is rather appropriate given the way things are going here at the moment. Since most people have now either finished Season 1 or are totally uninterested, there isn't really much point in my laying down my thoughts on this series, but I can't resist saying ...
- Similarities to The Postman bring the word "plagiarism" to mind. On the other hand, the idea of no electricity, not because the oil has run out (a la Mad Max and a dozen other post-apocalyptic films) but because something is stopping electricity working, is new and surprisingly effective.)
- I wonder if Americans really would start robbing and murdering each other on Day 2 of the Apocalypse, and if so, is it just an American thing? I wonder if later series will show what happens in the rest of the world, and I bet the Japanese would be much better behaved. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if by the time the Americans get the lights back on, they've already found ways to run everything without electricity.
- I can't work out if the way militias take over is getting at the gun lobby, or the way the militias forbid citizens' owning weapons is sucking up to them.
- I like the Game-of-Thronesy way characters get killed off just to thwart viewers' expectations.
- It has that Kripke style we've come to love in Supernatural, and the Bad Robot production brings Lost and Fringe to mind.
- Kripke isn't quite up to Whedon standards yet, but he still has some great lines; e.g.,
Nora: He's a Catholic priest.
Miles: So you're not his type, then. - Speaking of Nora, hot women with guns, bows and explosives, yay!!!
