Work and Almost-work
Tuesday, November 13th, 2012 12:33 amIt's amazing how work-like play activities provide a way to escape from real work that puts money on the table or advances your career. As usual I have a dozen things to do for my job or related academic business - grading papers, peer-reviewing an article, preparing a talk and so forth. My first instinct was to forget it all and play Bananabread, but I settled for editing the Wikipedia entry on Atatürk, which I've been fiddling with since Saturday (the anniversary of his death). Now I've got into researching the great man's love life. This is mainly stuff I knew but had no sources for, though I discovered some things I hadn't known, particulary about Eleni Karinte, with whom he had an unfulfilled relationship while he was a student. Amazingly, there was no Wikipedia page on Eleni, so I just had to write one. It screams "Romeo and Juliet" - Greek-Macedonian girl, Turkish cadet, though fortunately it ended less tragically, with Eleni's father packing her off to another town. With material like this, is it surprising that I'm putting off planning a presentation about teachers' feedback on essays?
