Language Interface Stupidity
Monday, September 6th, 2010 11:05 pmI am used to the idiotic assumption by websites that because I have a Turkish IP number I must want to read the site in Turkish, even if I type www.somecorp.com not www.somecorp.com.tr. I mean, anyone who is in Turkey must speak Turkish, musn't they? As it happens, I do, so it's a minor irritation, especially since there is usually a drop-down menu somewhere to change the language. Now, however, I am faced with sites that assume I can only speak one language. Having convinced ovi.com that I really would prefer to read their content in English, I try to download a Turkish app and they won't let me, saying "Sorry, this item is not available in your language." It's a package of Turkish emergency phone numbers, so this is hardly surprising.
