I think I'm in love
Friday, February 29th, 2008 05:24 pmSometimes, around election times, I play the mind-game "If I were American, who would I vote for?" The usual answer is "nobody, not even Ralph Nader." But now, I think I'd definitely give my vote to Obama and this is why:
Then on the other side, we have Hillary Clinton. While I'd like to see a woman as president of the USA, I also wanted to see a woman as Prime Minister of Britain, and we got Margaret Thatcher. Clinton evokes the same gut-level response in me. While her policies aren't anywhere near as obnoxious as Thatcher's, she still turns my stomach whenever I see her.
So I'm hoping that it'll be an Obama vs. McCain stand-off. Then the worst-case scenario will be that McCain will win, in which case we'll have the novel situation of a Republican president with a three-digit IQ.
Equality is a moral imperative. That’s why throughout my career, I have fought to eliminate discrimination against LGBT Americans. In Illinois, I co-sponsored a fully inclusive bill that prohibited discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity, extending protection to the workplace, housing, and places of public accommodation. In the U.S. Senate, I have co-sponsored bills that would equalize tax treatment for same-sex couples and provide benefits to domestic partners of federal employees. And as president, I will place the weight of my administration behind the enactment of the Matthew Shepard Act to outlaw hate crimes and a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act to outlaw workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. In a presidential race at a time when supporting gay rights is almost as bad as looking a bit like a Muslim and having an Arabic name, that took guts.
