Expanding my vocabulary
Thursday, July 12th, 2007 03:29 amI am still uncertain about the educational potential of Second Life: like so many things dreamed up by geeky educators, 3D virtual classrooms are probably less effective than they look, and although I like to use online tools (I'm a big Moodle fan), I still think you can't usually do better than chalk and talk. OK, whiteboard markers and talk.
However, my experiences in Second Life are certainly educational for me. For example, I have recently added two words to my vocabulary: "neko" and "drow". Those who know of my long role-playing history may be surprised at my ignorance of the latter, but funnily enough, one role-playing game that I have never played is Dungeons & Dragons. I've played Dragonquest, Runequest, Space Opera, Star Trek, Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia, Price of Freedom (which we adapted so that it was England invaded by the French and renamed to "Prix de Frommage"), Vampire: the Masquerade and half a dozen games invented by myself and my friends - but not a single game of D&D.
