Brrr!

I normally don't have much sympathy for those American conservatives who look for loopholes in climate science as a way of getting out of Kyoto. Their argument seems to be something like "Well, at least 5% of scientists say global warming doesn't exist, or it exists but we didn't do it, and another 5% say that it's too late to do anything about it, so why the hell should I give up my SUV when there's a one in ten chance it won't save the world?" Nevertheless, when I read this article at physorg.com even I was tempted to think "What the hell, I'll get a gaz-guzzling Hummer." Of course I didn't, since (a) I can't afford it and (b) I still think it's best to play safe when it comes to the planet. So maybe a Suzuki is in order. Anyway, the news is that a new ice age is back on the cards. Readers who are as long in the tooth as I will remember the last ice age panic back in the 1970s. Well actually, most of us didn't panic, but it gave SF writers some good ideas for plots. By the time it had sunk in, it had been superseded by worries about global warming. But apparently, a mini ice age could happen, and happen quite soon, according to Dr. Abdusamatov, who predicts that decreasing solar radition could make things get very chilly around 2040. Looking at the weather forecast, I'm tempted to revise that to "next week".

On the other hand, searching for "ice age" and "Abdusamatov" came up with nothing, so perhaps the fear is unfounded, or perhaps physicists can't type.

Just to show there's nothing new under the sun ...

But of course, no Catholics reacted violently to this kind of insult to the Pope. Not at all.
