I teach an English course on the "great books" of political philosophy in tandem with a philosophy course based on the same books. After teaching J.S. Mill's "On Liberty" for a week, I've just found out that my counterpart is, unlike everyone else in the department, teaching "Utilitarianism" rather than "On Liberty". Oh dear.
There again, I resent the idea that this is some kind of "adjunct" course, so perhaps I should stick to my erroneous guns and say that it's my course and I'll teach whatever books I please. Besides, "On Liberty" is a better read than "Utilitarianism".
