I've never been to any of these formal bauet things - the closest I got was when the university gave us and the polisci lecturers some cash to go to a restaurant together and bond. Apparently the only occasion Wittgenstein wore a tie while he was at Cambridge was when they had a formal banquet and there something on the menu he particularly liked, so he borrwoed a tie from a friend in order to get in.
